Your torso length, not your height, is the determining factor when choosing a pack size.
An ill-fitting pack does nothing to help your confidence in the backcountry. You want the weight of your pack distributed evenly between your hips and shoulders and finding that sweet spot can be tricky. All of our 40L, 55L and 70L Series packs come in four size options – Small, Medium, Large + Tall – and can be sized using the following somewhat-scientific process.
- Tilt your head slightly forward to locate the bony bump at the base of your neck. This is your 7th cervical (or C7) vertebra.
- Using a flexible tape measure, have someone measure starting at that spot and running down along the curve of your spine.
- Place your hands on your hips so you can feel your iliac crest, which serves as the “shelf” of your pelvic girdle. It is the imaginary horizontal plane going across your hipbones. Position your hands so your thumbs are reaching behind you near your spine at that imaginary horizontal plane across your hipbones near your iliac crest.
- Have your friend finish measuring at the point where the tape crosses an imaginary line drawn between your thumbs. This distance is your torso length.
Ideally, you want the shoulder straps of the pack to come off the top of your shoulders perpendicular to your shoulder blades, not wrapping over and behind, or going towards the back of your neck. This process can be sabotaged or flawed (thanks, friend-who-can’t-measure), so please keep in mind that if you receive a pack from us and need another size, we’re happy to help facilitate an exchange.
